中村雅俊は、20世紀を代表する現代根付作家のひとりである。

本名は中村徳定。父・中村空哉に師事し、伝統的な彫刻技法を学んだ。

戦後、象牙や柘植を用いた精緻な小彫刻で頭角を現し、特に海外市場において高い評価を受けた。アメリカ人コレクター、レイモンド・ブッシェルとの関係により、その作品は欧米の収集家に広く紹介され、現代根付の国際的評価を確立する一因となった。

雅俊の作風は、過度な装飾や誇張を避け、量感と面の整理による完成度を重視する点に特徴がある。

小品でありながら、素材の持つ質感と造形の緊張感を最大限に引き出す技量は高く評価されている。

A finely carved ivory ojime in the form of a stylized bird.

The smooth, compact form is characteristic of Masatoshi’s refined approach, emphasizing volume and balance rather than excessive detailing.

The minimal carving enhances the tactile quality of the material, while the subtle red pigment on the beak and underside adds a gentle accent. The small inlaid eye with red outlining gives the piece a quiet vitality.
